Great tool, some minor quibbles

This is my second Leatherman Wave and I am quite pleased with it.
I am a multi-tool fan and have several dozen Leatherman, Gerber, Victorinox and Wenger tools (plus a good assortment of other less popular ones). There is a reason that the Leatherman Wave is one of the most popular tools. The workmanship (i.e., fit/finish/machining) of the Wave is excellent. Materials are of great quality. Tool choice and design shows that Leatherman has been doing this a long time, though there is room for improvement.
Though it’s in a different price range, the tool it seems most comparable to is the Gerber Suspension multi-pliers. The sizes are nearly identical though the Leatherman Wave packs more tools into the same space. The Wave tools are also larger. For example, the blade is almost an inch longer on the Wave.
Like almost all the Leatherman tools that I own, the machining and fit is excellent. Initially there is considerable resistance when opening the Wave, but after a few weeks of use (or a good hour of dedicated time opening and closing each time) the metal seems to wear just enough that opening becomes easy without becoming loose.
Update: After several weeks of use it has indeed become much easier to open but still doesn’t feel loose.
The materials on the Wave are excellent. Though I haven’t used it with a great amount of force, the pliers are sturdy and the blade, saw, screwdriver and scissors did not deform or break when doing some basic household maintenance. Lesser tools have failed me in similar work. My original Wave had some cosmetic rusting which I removed with a rotary tool and a polishing compound. The steel on this Wave looks slightly different so we’ll see in a few months how it holds up to the Florida humidity.
My biggest issue with the Wave is the pliers, most importantly, the lack of a sprint assist makes it difficult for the tasks I need. For example, quite often I find myself pulling large staples and smaller nails from the fencing and woodwork around the outside of my house. These are there for various reasons, including Christmas decorations, telephone and television cabling, etc.. Of all the tools, I use the pliers most for this. The sprint assist on the Gerber Suspension makes this task very easy, not to mention similar work with smaller items. The Wave, though probably sturdier than the Suspension, is difficult to use in these situations. Alas, though the other tools are extremely good quality, I don’t use them nearly as much as the pliers. For this reason the Suspension is what I carry around the house.
Finally, pricing for the Wave is not bad. Shop around as there is as much as a $50 difference when I bought mine.
Update: This identical tool is also sold with a Monarch 300 flashlight for the same price. I purchased the combo for $1 more than the Wave alone.

Best Tool Ever
The Leatherman Wave is the best tool I have ever purchased. Its many uses and has earned a place on my belt all the time. I cannot go anywhere without it as it is so useful. Broken sprinkler no problem it cuts right through the PVC pipe. Need to fix a vacuum cleaner belt the Leatherman Wave is the only tool you will need. Take apart the vacuum with the screw driver and cut all the strings that get wound around the brush. Need to take apart a computer? It has got you covered on a laptop or a desktop. I find new ways to use the Wave each day and I am impressed with the quality of the tool.
Do not believe people that say it can be opened with one hand. The blade is razor sharp and I can see someone hurting themselves pretty bad trying a move like that.

What a wonderful little tool! You strap it only your belt and as the days go by you find yourself using it more and more and more. It’s just so easy having it right there.
The tool is extremely well made, with no machining marks or slop. The blades are quite sharp and I love the one-hand opening feature. I also love having the option of using the straight or serrated blade. The incredibly fine screwdriver has been quite useful to fix eyeglasses or to work on toys and electronics. Sometimes I find myself taking it out and popping out the blades or tool just for the sheer joy of handling an incredibly well made product.
The only possible quibbles are that it doesn’t have a bottle opener and that it’s rather heavy. I have a Skeletool CX, which is much lighter, but I always take the Wave because I love the extra tools.
I should point out that this was my first multi-tool, and after LOTS of reading I settled on the Wave because I read that it was the most popular Leatherman and was viewed as their benchmark piece. There are many other models, designed for cooks and gardeners and tech guys and so forth, but after much research I found that the Wave best met the needs of a regular fellow like me.
For about $60, this is a killer graduation / birthday / whatever gift.

Excellent Redesign
Leatherman substantially redesigned the already successful Wave, and did a terrific job. They added a much needed “fine” screwdriver which flips over to give you both a fine Phillips head as well as a fine Flat head. The larger screwdriver also flips over to give you both Phillips and Flat heads. In addition the utensils now “lock” in place when opened so no more danger of catching your finger when applying pressure. They also added a metric (cm) and an “english” (inch) measure along the handle which come in very useful. A truly great tool!

Wave is a great all around tool
Love my Leatherman. It was hard to choose a model at first, but the Wave does the trick for solid all around use. It works for most small jobs like watches and computer parts, but it also can take a beating.
I was impressed by the sharpness of the straight knife when it first came out of the box, but I feel that after a few weeks of use that’s already become a little duller. I plan to have it professionally sharpened.
(The packaging it comes in is tough to get through, and you need a Leatherman to get through it!)
