VEGETABLE GARDENING USING POTS

How do you grow a vegetable garden with a good variety when you live in an upstairs apartment?
My family and I are sick of eating processed crap that has preservitives sprinkled on everything! So we wondering how you can grow a garden on a balcony or can you even do that? What plants grow better in pots. What kind of planting pots are available for this kind of venture? In this horrid economy iv found that its much cheaper and healthier to grow your own food and eat! So please any green thumbed people help me out here. I live in an upstairs apartment, but it has a nice size balcony that i never use. Thanx in advance.
we dont have a community garden in my town. U cant name atleast 1 thing i can grow on my balcony????
any big pot that drains water, mom saves her green peppers over winter inside, in 5 gallon pails with holes drilled for drainage, plants don’t care what the vessel looks like, just as long as it holds dirt and drains water.
mom says any lettuces, radishes, tomato, green peppers, table onions, (salad, skinny type), swiss chard, kohlrabi, any edible greens, (mustard, kale, spinach, etc.)
sounds like she is saying top crops, as long as its not rooted like carrots, beets, potato, that sort of veggie it should be able to grow in a good sized pot, or too tall like corn, okra,
she says her sister once grew a cucumber in a pot that vined the bars and make enough cucumbers that the neighbor down would reach up and pick one sometimes.
the more sun shine the better she says.
