FLOWER GARDENING GARDENER
When is the best time to start a small flower garden?

I live in suburban NJ 2 miles from the shoreline and would like to start a small flower garden, nothing difficult or extravagant, just a few of the easiest flowers to grow for beginners. I want so badly to develop a hobby out of this.

I was wondering if anyone knows the best time to plant in my area of the country- could i start now and see some results before summer ends? I don’t mind if they die, as long as i get some practice in. Or should i grow flowers in doors in the winter time and plant them next spring.
Also, What are some good flower combinations that are easy for a very new gardener.

Thank you very much!

It’s a little late for that this year, but you may still be able to find some annuals at garden center that can be planted now, and, certainly, given the weather in the Northeast, there are some perennials that can be planted as well, as long as they are well watered when the heat hits.

Start by marking out the area you want to plant and removing any grass or weeds. Decide what you want to put in. Annuals and many perennials are very easy to plant, but start with started plants at this point in the year. Look on-line at some of the seed and plant catalogs (Burpee, Johnny’s Selected Seeds, Gurney, etc., for photos of mature plants and an idea of their bloom times) to get an idea of how tall and what color various flowers are. Rototill or fork up the ground and add some fertilizer to it, turning the fertilizer in. Plant your flowers, combining both perennials you really like and annuals. Plant in groups of 3 to 5 plants and water them in well. Since it looks like this week will continue to be cool and damp here, you won’t have your plants sunburn or dry out badly, but a frequent watering schedule to get them established is in order.
