Shed Building for Dummies – Great Place To Start

My girlfriend was at wit’s end, she had no storage space left in the house or garage.  So she bought her husband the book Shed Building For Dummies, thinking that was all her husband would need to build them a storage shed in the backyard.

Her husband read the book and it was exactly what he needed.  He is one of those do it yourselfers that likes to just jump into a project with only a picture in his head.  No plans or drawing to go by.  This is not how you want to tackle a project like building a shed.  Without detailed drawings before you start your project, you could be in trouble.

In order to budget your project, you need a complete material list and you need to know what materials you need and how to cut the wood so that everything fits together properly.

A few other details you will need to decide on is where you will locate your shed, ventilation, do you need electricity, how about security for your valuables, exterior design, foundation, etc.  There are many things to consider before you ever even think about getting started.

Shed Building for Dummies is a great book for a beginner to get the basic overview of shed building and a great place to start.  If you have any building experience, you will just need a good set of plans.  You want to make sure any plans you do purchase were put together by a professional and will meet your areas building codes. If you belong to a homeowners association, you will need to submit your plans for approval as well.

Once he did all his research and got his set of plans, it only took him a few weeks to build his shed.  Had he not had the plans, he will even admit that he probably would never have completed the shed. And if he did, it probably wouldn’t have been safe and it sure wouldn’t have had the proper foundation, wouldn’t have looked as good and probably wouldn’t lasted very long.

I am the wife of a “Handy Man” and sometimes even his helper. We have saved so much money over the years because we were able to “fix it or build it” ourselves.

Being a handy man doesn’t come naturally for everyone, but you can still tackle some of these projects if you have a good set of plans and detailed instructions.
