WATER GARDENING ARIZONA
Hey Gardeners… Help Me Out! What Plants Grow Well Without Taking So Much Water. Anyone, Answer Please! Thx!?

I just have a couple more questions to finish this up. Right now, my current problem is with gardening. Based off my question in the subject line, that is what I need to know.

One more detail, I live in Arizona where the temperature is over 105 degrees basically all summer and nothing usually lower than 60 in the winter. Between summer and winter (spring and fall), the temperature is usually around 75-80ish. I’m sure someone has some info I need. Let me know what you think, open to all suggestions! Thanks a lot!

Oh, by the way, this is not for me. I’m studying Fire Science but I am looking to help out a friend. Over at his place, so just helpin’ out. Thanks.

Go to your local nursery. DO NOT go to a big box store like Home Depot or Walmart. Many times they have plants unsuited for the zone they are in.
Your local nursery will have experts who can show you plants that will do well for your situation. There are more xeric plants than just cactus.
Also, using lots of gravel in a desert landscape contributes to the heat island effect. Gravel holds heat. I am NOT advocating a lawn by any means. But there are many nice ornamental grasses that work well in the desert.

This link will take you to a catalog nursery which specializes in xeric plants. You can get ideas from it. You do have to watch though. Some of the plants are not xeric and require more water. And remember, even xeric plants need more water than normal to get established. Anything you plant will need to be watered frequently for the first year to get the roots established.
