Gardening Methods

I love lavender, and have tried without success to maintain it healthy…?

Everytime I buy a lavender plant, I take care as per instruction, making sure is on the righ spot in the garden and waiting for a little while so that I can transplant from pot to soil, but it always dries up in the pot.
I live in Southern california, so the weather is good for this type of herb, I really would like some gardening tips to make my lavender last and grow healthy and beautiful. Can anyone advice? Also any good books on how to grow an herb garden? Thank you much
