Watering your garden by hose or water butt?
Hi,
While watering my garden last night from my water butt I wondered about the following:
Is it cheaper to connect my hose to my tap and use the water OR use the electric pump to pump water from the water butt.
Of course ideally the pump would be powered by a solar charged battery..
Any ideas?
It works out much more environmentally friendly using the water butt. It takes energy to clean mains water plus pumping it to your house. Another consideration is you are helping to reduce flooding by retaining run off water. Also in some areas run off water uses the same system as the sewage pipes which then means more energy being used at the sewage works.
If you water butt was at a higher level than your garden. you could consider a gravity fed trickle hose. Lay the perforated hose around the plants then connect an ordinary garden hose to this and your water butt with a shut off lever. Lie out on your deckchair with a beer as your garden gets watered, the ultimate in energy conservation
