GARDENING TIPS HYDRANGEAS
Is it a good time to plant a Crape Myrtle tree? ?

When is the best time to plant say the Crape Myrtle tree?

Also, I will have to transplant my existing hydrangeas somewhere else in my garden to give way for the Crape Myrtle tree. Is it ok to transplant the hydrangeas right now? I live in the San Francisco Bay area where temps range from the upper 30s to about 70 degrees. Some rain this year.

Also, any tips on transplanting the hydrangeas? Thanks in advance.

You can move the hydrangea now. They like morning sun and need about 4 hours in order to have flowers. I had a ton in Atlanta and when they got less than 4 hours I had NO blooms. Afternoon hot sun made them water hogs. Expect the foliage to wilt for sure, and water them every other day to limp along. Every day watering may cause some other problems so don’t over water. When they settle in , this summer , you can water them like crazy but not during the transplant.
Want Blue blooms – put some old SOS pads in the soil. Old rusty nuts and bolts or nails.
Want pink – throw in some lime. Concrete busted up has lime in it. Sheet rock as well. Getting this to the roots when moving it will change it’s color faster.
They are water hogs and like organic material so keep that in mind when mixing your soil – good and sloppy.Keep them mulched heavily as well to cut down on the watering. Prune within 2 months after it finishes blooming . It sets its flowers in the fall for the following year.

Yes the Crape Myrtle is dormant right now so you can plant it w/o worries.
