1. What was the indian ocaen trade network and what major centers of civilzation did it connect?
2.Descibe in detail the atlantic system that is transformed the americas from an isolated region contaning 2 major empires into an area where Native Americans, Africans and Europeans lived
3.Explain how china China, Japan and Mughal india wre able to largely set the terms of their encounters with european explorers in 1500-1600
4.Summarize the spread of democratic or liberal ideas and institutions in Europe from Englans glorious revolution through the french revolution
5.Using three specific examples examine how Voltaire’s Candid is a critique of such establuished European insittuions as the church, monarchy, an army. Would you argues that he does this effectively?
6.The last line from Candide, “we must go work in the garden” is famous why? what does voltaire mean? and why did he end the story that way?

To start with, aren’t the answers in the reading your professor assigned? Even if you could get answers to all of these questions here your professor is probably looking for something specific from the reading. Anyways…

1. The two major ones I can think of are the East India Company (Britain – India) and the Netherlands – Java/Sumatra trade networks.

2. Many European countries took part in this system; here’s a list of the most dominant ones and the areas they colonized in the New World:

Spain: Central America and most of South America excluding Brazil, plus Cuba, Florida and a few other Caribbean islands.

Portugal: Brazil

France: Quebec, Haiti, Louisiana

England: most of the eastern part of North America and Canada except for the French portions.

Netherlands: Curacao

It would take a long time for me to talk about all of these trade networks in detail but I suggest you read up on the history of these places and especially their connection with their respective European countries – that would be a good start.

I don’t really feel qualified to answer the other questions. :( Good luck!
