Step-By-Step Plan For Building Wooden Garden Sheds

You should consider constructing your own wooden garden shed if you are in need of a bit more storage space and you are handy around the home. Let’s say you aren’t too comfortable around woodworking tools. Well then, garden sheds are the perfect project to jump into and get your feet wet – and it can usually be done in less than one weekend.

Beginning with a step-by-step process, we’ll go through what it takes to build yourself a great wooden shed that will last for many years. All your questions may not be answered though since this is a basic overview of the construction process.

Step 1 This step involves planning how you will use the shed for your individual needs. You can choose between designing a completely custom shed by using special software, build from a set of already designed shed plans, or you can purchase a wooden shed kit that you can easily assemble.

Step 2 Now choose carefully where to locate your wooden shed. You may want to build your shed on a wooden frame or “skid” just in case you want to move it to a different location. A skid frame will allow you to slide the shed to another spot. Its also less permanent and easier to make than pouring a concrete slab. Be aware and research any zoning restrictions you may have on your property.

Step 3 Now you can prepare the site. You should first remove any large objects like rocks or plants. The site should be almost level with a slight slope going downwards towards the rear of the shed so water will run off behind the shed and not puddle under or around it. Taking the extra time to make sure this step is done properly will save you a lot of headaches later on.

Step 4 Time for the fun part – actually building the wooden shed. Assuming you are building from a set of shed plans, follow the instructions for measuring and cutting all the pieces. Your plans will also show you step-by-step how to put the shed together.

Step 5 Adding all the details and options is the last step. You may choose to add some fancy trim or heavy duty hardware. These are the type of things that really make your shed a one-of-a-kind masterpiece.

The real satisfying part of this whole project is when you are finished, you can step back and feel great knowing you built it yourself. And, your new shed should last for many years to come.
