DIRECT GARDENING PLANTS SHRUBS

What’s the best ground cover for a small, high use dog bathroom area?
I live in a ground floor condo with a large breed dog. The paved patio has a small garden area that she uses to go to the washroom. It is dirt with some shrubs and held together with landscape ties. Any suggestions on an appropriate ground cover for this area? Grass is not an option as the area is damp with no direct sunlight. In fact, I don’t think a plant of any kind is appropriate for this area. I was thinking something like gravel, bark mulch, or just dirt. And my biggest concerns are cleanliness and odour.
Sand would be a good option. It will be easy to clean up their messes from sand – water filters through sand – it is inexpensive and easy to replace as necessary – and generally, dogs like to use sandy areas as potty areas.
Hope this helps.
