CHEAP GARDENING IDEAS
Raising garden beds – cheap and environmental materiels?

I have two bare beds in my garden which I’d like to raise. I’m interested in using recycled/environmentally-friendly (and cheap) materials. I have access to some old used bricks (some broken) but I’d rather not use cement. An alternative would be responsibly-sourced railway sleepers – but access to the garden is through a narrow bending corridor so they would need to be cut down probably. I think car tires would look hideous! Any ideas? It would be great to be able to sit on the edge of the beds when I have garden parties.

Have you heard of urbanite? I know that you didn’t want to use cement but broken concrete pieces make beautiful walls and terraces. You could use the like for a raised bed like we did when we took out the turf.
It’s free and it saves the stuff from going to the landfill. It’s hard work but beautiful results that you can be proud of.
Just keep an eye out for those dumpsters that people use when remodeling. Most will be more than happy to let you go through the bins saving money on their dump costs.
Here’s a nice example http://www.stripmindmedia.net/blog/2008/05/urbanite-construction.html
