BEST CONTAINER GARDENING SOIL
How do you start successful tomatoes? I’ve got the seeds to start good but then they wilt. What’s wrong?

Well I don’t have alot of money but still want to grow a garden. So I decided to start my own garden right from seeds.I got peppers(jalpeno, serano, banana, and yellow),tomatoes, dill and cucumbers for pickling. So far everything has germinated good but with my tomatoes, most of them died once they got about 2-3 inches tall from wilting over. What do I do to stop the wilting from happening? Now with my peppers, what is the best way to geminate these seeds? The reason I ask this is because I started to germinate these about 8 days ago and I see nothing happening, where everything else has been up for a few days already. Am I doing something wrong? I started them the same way as every other seed by putting them in starter containers about 1/8 inch below the surface of a good starter mix of soil. Can anyone help please.

The pepper seeds will come but next time put them literally just under the top of the seed compost. Keep them well watered but not soaking. Your tomatoes are obviously drying out. Keep them damp with the roots well watered. Don’t forget to ’side-shoot’ them. Not joking. Where a leaf leaves the stem, you will see a new branch protruding, pinch it out provided it is not the beginning of a fruit truss. Incidentally, something occurred to me. If you smoke, make sure your hands have no trace of nicotine on them as tomatoes detest it and will die. Leave about five or six trusses of tomatoes for each plant then pinch out the top of the plant. If inside they need to be fertilised by hand. Traditionally a rabbits tail was used but a soft brush will do. Go from one truss to the other using the brush to transfer pollen from one plant truss to another. You should have no problem. Put in a stick at an early stage to tie the plant to when the tomatoes start growing. I found that if you can get some cows manure, put it into a barrel of water with loads of nettles, take the liquid from this vile stew and pour over the bottom of the plants and you will get some fantastic results. With cucumbers you have to pinch out the male flowers before fertilisation takes place. You will redcognise them, they are the ones with no mini cucumber at the flower. A last thing about manure – if it is too fresh it will scald and kill the tender young plants. I hope you manage to cultivate green fingers and your efforts are a success. Good luck……….
