CONTAINER FLOWER GARDENING
Tips wanted for growing watermelons in container garden on deck?

On a lark, I planted watermelons on my deck in the container garden. I now have some 6 foot vines with flowers, and a half dozen ping-pong ball-sized watermelons developing. My main question is: do I need to remove all of the young melons except for one per vine, or may I leave all of the melons develop on each vine?

Should I place something between the young fruits and the wooden deck to cushion them, or should I leave it all alone and let nature take its course?

Any other suggestions? Thanks.

We grow big supersized pumpkins in the ground…pots are a whole different matter.
As far as leaving more than one on each vine…it depends on which variety you have planted.
If you have the smaller sized watermelon like sugar daddies then you can leave more fruit on the vines.
If you have the larger watermelon variety then you may only want to leave one fruit per vine.

You can use foam pieces or old place mats under your developing watermelon to protect it from your deck.

One thing that we use to feed our big pumpkin plants is seaweed fertilizer.
You can get either name brand like “Neptune’s Harvest” or at Walmart they have it the generic version for about $6 for concentrate mix that would last you the summer. It would feed the plant and fruit with more organic nutrients rather than using miracle grow or etc. We use it once a week with watering can.
